Stutz artists open studios and welcome visitors on August 7, 2009

Open studios preceded "Power over Poverty" gallery opening and silent auction on Friday, August 7, 2009.

Artists who participate in the annual Stutz Artists Open House typically stand in pristine studios and show off their work. But on Friday, August. 7, 2009, visitors were invited to see what the artists' studios look like the other 363 days of the year.

Approximately 20 artists opened their studios to guests the first Friday in August from noon to 5 p.m., and many demonstrated their art or had hands-on activities. Beginning Aug. 7, Stutz artists will host open studios in the afternoon on the first Friday of the month in conjunction with the Indianapolis Downtown Artists & Dealers Association's (IDADA) monthly First Friday gallery tour.

"Lots of people have seen our studios when they're all cleaned up for the Open House, but this is a chance to see what they look like every day, when we're working and making art," said Carol L. Myers, one of the participating artists. "Families looking for things to do with kids as the summer winds down should enjoy this," Myers added.

Artists will demonstrated printmaking, finger painting and eraser carving, and there were opportunities for kids and adults to try their hands at art.

The event was free, but visitors were encouraged to bring a canned food donation for Gleaners Food Bank.
