"Social Currency" - March 4-25, 2011 at the STUTZARTSPACE Gallery
How do the photos you post on Facebook affect your social currency? How does the photography reflect your communities and how you interact with them? These are some of the issues fine art photographers will explore in “Social Currency,” an exhibition opening March 4 at STUTZARTSPACE.
Showcasing a range of photography, the exhibit will look at how photographs are used and shared within communities and social networks, both online and offline.
Participating artists include Andy Chen (curator), Paul D'Andrea, Lauren Ditchley, Marg Herder, Ron Kern, Aaron Law, Ginny Taylor Rosner, Satch, John Sherman, Holly Sommers, and Matt Sommers.
“In some ways, posting photos has become so commonplace that we forget we’re making a statement with each image,” said Andy Chen, curator of the exhibition and one of the participating artists. “This exhibition and the process leading up to it show images that have been used as social currency and consider the impact of the shared image.”

In today’s networked and connected culture, trading in “social currency” has become a key factor in increasing one’s sense of community, granting access to information and knowledge, helping to form one’s identity and providing status and recognition.
The exhibition opens March 4 at STUTZARTSPACE at noon with a reception from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., in conjunction with the Indianapolis Downtown Artists & Dealers Association’s (IDADA) monthly First Friday gallery tour.
The show runs through March 25. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, or by appointment. STUTZARTSPACE is a nonprofit visual art center on the first floor of the Stutz Business Center.
