January 16 – February 28, 2014
"Pile" by Kevin Neal Gardner
Exhibition is open to the public in the Raymond James Stutz Art Gallery from January 23 – February 28, 2014, Thursday and Friday only, from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. or by appointment. Artists' Reception will be held on February 7, 5-9 pm during IDADA First Friday.
Kevin Gardner became interested in the subject of football as he observed the connection between the gestures and images of American football to Roman relief sculpture and historic battle paintings. "To me, American football is strange, large, battle-like, often sentimentalized, and dramatic on the scale of opera. Though not one, I am fascinated by the devotion of a fan given a national culture of irony and sarcasm. These paintings are an outsider's take on an insider's game."

Gardner attended graduate school at Indiana University in Bloomington, receiving a teaching scholarship and ultimately an MFA in Painting. Gardner is currently an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at Berea College, a diverse and tuition-free liberal arts college located in the small town of Berea, Kentucky, where the bluegrass meets the hills. In addition to teaching all levels of painting, he teaches drawing and Critical Thinking in the Liberal Arts, a freshman writing seminar.
Gardner's painting is mostly perceptual and is frequently inspired by and created in dialogue with historic work.
