STUTZARTSPACE presents "You Are Here: New Paintings by Shawn Causey"
Inviting viewers to discover hints of their own reflections absorbed in these shiny, marred surfaces, Indianapolis artist Shawn Causey unveils her newest work – silver and gold metallic spray paint applied over textured layers of drywall mud and house paint – on Aug. 3 at STUTZARTSPACE gallery in the historic Stutz Building.
With "You Are Here: New Paintings by Shawn Causey," the artist captures in high relief the action of layering characteristic of her earlier work.
For her new approach, Causey thickly applies drywall mud and house paint to a stretched canvas. She then scrapes the surface with a trowel and uses a belt sander to create texture and lines that emerge with greater drama after a gilding of metallic spray paint. Causey has always experimented with texture in her work; this new process using ordinary materials has proven to be especially invigorating.
"The more time you spend looking and the closer you get to the work, the more you see reflected shapes and light all around you," she says. "These pieces are engaging in different settings - when I turn out the lights in the studio, they nearly glow with the light from the window."
With degrees in design and music from Herron School of Art & Design and Butler University, respectively, Causey finds deep satisfaction working alone in her studio at the Stutz, just as she did in the practice room at the piano. This inspired isolation has roots in her Indianapolis upbringing: As the oldest of six girls, she found solitude to be a rare and treasured experience.
